CONCENTRATION PHOTOVOLTAIC LENS: Silicone-On-Glass Fresnel Lens Built-to-Last, say 20 years

Date: 2010.09.09

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Changing the way High Concentration Photovoltaic (HCPV) System Operates

TAIPEI, TAIWAN (September, 2010) – With the public awareness of global warming, Solar power has been heated up like never before. Those deep blue colored solar panels have resided all over the places, such as solar power plant, parking lot, gymnasium, and even household rooftop. But have you ever seen those cool giant panels lifted up on a pole, equipped with lens, and have the ability to chase the sun? This concept is not new, but until now it gets mature and popular.

“The current blue-colored panels are all silicon based. They are relatively easy to install, “ stated Larry Lai, Probright’s Executive Vice President, “but the conversion rate is only around 13%~18% on the module and difficult to improve due to physical limitation. Their basic material – crystalline is also in a constant shortage status. HCPV system is the solution to those issues.”

There are three major components in HCPV: Fresnel Lens, III-V group chip, and tracking system. HCPV concentrate the sunlight to a spot onto the III-V group cell. It can minimize the cell usage without sacrificing efficiency and provide around 20%~30% of conversion rate on the module. The tracking system will chase the sun from rise to set also increase the efficiency. As for Fresnel lens, the most popular material is still PMMA (Acrylic). PMMA has the physical constraints of UV light resistance. The normal life time is around 3-5 years. It becomes an issue with tens of thousand lens transparency degrading and conversion rate dropping within 5 years. To resolve this issue, Silicone-on-Glass is widely accepted as the best solution so far. It can resist up to 20 years. But the commercially available SOG lens is still scarce.

Probright Technology has released a new series of Glasinel TM concentration Photovoltaic Fresnel lens with single and array variations for different applications with both PMMA and SOG type.

“We are glad to announce our Glasinel TM series of SOG lens for HCPV application to the market,” stated Vincent Wang, Assistant Vice President of Sales and Marketing, “The currently available variations for sample include single, 2 by 2, and 2 by 4 versions. Our target is to provide SOG lens in 8 by 8 before the end of this year. We will exhibit the Fresnel lens in different solar applications in Taiwan International Green Industry Show (TIGIS) from Oct 25th to 28th in Taipei World Trade Center. Welcome to visit us at Booth # 1120.”

Glasinel - High Concentration Photovoltaic Fresnel Lenses

Date: 2010.09.03

High Concentration Photovoltaic system

There are several technologies to convert solar power into electricity. Silicon based solution, including single, poly crystalline, and Thin-film poly crystalline, takes more than 90% share of current market. The current conversion rate of silicon based solution is limited to 18% to 24.7% max. However, the conversion rate of compound based chip, such as GaAs/GAInP/Ge crystalline, can achieve around 30% to 41.6% max. HCPV is the compound based solution that provides the highest efficiency. There are two types of HCPV system: one is reflective type using either reflective dish or linear Fresnel technology, the other one is refractive type using circular Fresnel lens or lens array.

Concentration Photovoltaic Fresnel Lenses

Glasinel TM product line is the refractive type of Concentration Photovoltaic Fresnel lens and lens array. Comparing to traditional PV, the advantage of Glasinel TM is quite straight forward.

  • Conversion efficiency
  • Minimized solar cell usage: Low total cost even added up the tracker and module costs
  • No material shortage issue
  • Recyclable material
  • Utilization of dry and otherwise deserted land

Applications

Solar concentrators are often mounted on a solar tracker in order to keep the focal point upon the cell as the sun moves across the sky. With the concentration of the sun light, the cells require high-capacity heat sinks to prevent thermal destruction.

HCPV is suitable for large-sized solar power plant and/or combination with parking lot and farm application. The desired locations for HCPV are those with abundant sunshine and dry weather.

Lens Construction

The Glasinel TM product series consists of two different type of material: Silicon on Glass and PMMA.

Date: 2010.07.27

TAIPEI, TAIWAN (JULY, 2010) – Probright Technology has released a new series of Holo Screen with see-through capability designated for shopping mall, sport bar, telepresence, and retail store digital signage application. Floating image of product or brand name can be easily generated on the shop window to attract people’s attention. Futuristic and scientific look and feel is the main drive to lure customer to stop by.

With years of experience in design and manufacturing optical lenses for rear projection screen, Holo screen is initially designed with transparent blue to provide great contrast effect and sharp image especially for retail store window display.

The new series adds four other colors, green, orange, yellow, and clear, to fit for various requirements for contrast and application. BLUE provides best contrast feel, GREEN lighter, then ORANGE, YELLOW and at last CLEAR. Shop owner and integrator get the chance to choose for meet different needs in design.

“With our High-penetrated Optical Material technology, also known as HOM,” stated Larry Lai, Probright’s Executive Vice President, “Holo screen can provide see-through capability without sacrificing image quality. We are excited to be able to offer this new series to help shop owner and integrator to enhance the advertising effects, branding awareness and system design.”
